Dear Fouther I now take this my best opertunety two write you a fiew linds two inform you that I am well at present and hope those fiew linds will find you all the saim  in the first place I will tel you that Sergent John Abit is wounded in two places  he was sent two the hospitel at Port Royal two day but I expect he is ded by this time  I dont no wether you was acuanted with him or not  he ust two be about the home guards

at Fourwoods School hous  he was the man that sing dixey [Dixie] land and about the Luthern traders he belonged to the 48 New York regment  they charge on Fort Wagner  their was four regments charged on it and they wer moed down like wedes 


Whell as I havent writ eney sence the eight of this month  I will tel you the trip we have had we left Seabrook Islund [Island] the eight of this month and the ninth we was at sea and the [light] tenth we were run up Janes [James] River and at night landed on James Island  the eleventh on picket  twelveth in line of batel redey two

charge on that baterey  we did las July th 16 but the ortters wer counter manded and the thirteenth on picket  the fourteenth asleap in camp  the fifteenth we wer atacted by eleven thousend rebels and they had eleven pieces of artilrey playing on us for four hours and then they wer forces two retreat when our gun boat run up and opned fire on them  our los was six kiled and three or four slightley wounded  the night of the sixteenth we avacuated the place  our compney was detailed two load bageg and it kep us hard at work untill morning

the morning of the seventeeth we loaded on bord the steamer John adms [Adams] and run down two Folie [Folly] Island and layed their untill night and then we marched up the shore two to uper end of the island and crosed the river on this ilent  it was mrning when we got hear  the [you] the eighteenth the gun boats comenced bombarden Fort Wagner and played on her untill dark and then heir was eight regments charged on it but was defeated with a hevey los  I dont no how meney their was kiled but heir was two boat loads of wounded went out two day
