Dear Sister  I now take my pen in hand to let you no that I am well at present and hope these hew linds will find you the saim  we have had three fights this month and the last one was A pruty survear one  we charge on A rebel batrey and got defeated after loosing a power of men  this fight hapned the sixteenth of this month

we are now within six of seven miles of Charlesten [Charleston] now but I think we will have hard fighten to doe befor we get their  I want you to take care of this picture and have it in a fraim  I have a nother verey large one I would like you to have but cant send it now  Marey [Mary] the last letery I sent to you instead of dating it June I daited it January  wright soon  I still remain your brother  E W Pierce
