    Tezcatlipoca, ¿Lucifer descarado?
(Latin American Studies Program, University of Delaware, Newark, DE, 2016-10-31) González Tristán, Juan Bosco
The gods of the New World were representations of natural forces like the wind and rain or of activities like war and commerce. For the Franciscan friars who ventured to evangelize the lands discovered, there was no doubt that, based on their own Judeo-Christian tradition, each and every one of these gods was a demon, but only one of them was called Lucifer by the Franciscan chroniclers—the one called Tezcatlipoca who, because of his attributes, colors and attitudes, was compared with the Prince of Darkness by the friars.

(Latin American Studies Program, University of Delaware, Newark, DE, 2016-10-31) Nascimento-Kettner, Michele

(Latin American Studies Program, University of Delaware, Newark, DE, 2016-10-31) Picazo Muntaner, Antoni
In a general context where the colonial, legal and even military administration was subjected to constant legal changes, a review of the settlement of estates makes it possible to assess the extent to which the crown’s protection of the properties of those who died in America and the Hispanic Pacific did, in fact, ensure the proper distribution of the estate to the heirs.

Have Latin Americans Really Swung to the Left?
(Latin American Studies Program, University of Delaware, Newark, DE, 2016-10-31) Posso, Alberto
The 1990s saw a shift to the left in Latin American politics. However, there no studies comprehensively analyze political ideology and its determinants in Latin America during and after this period. Using survey data from 1996-2010, this paper makes two contributions. First, it finds that political ideology is determined by subjective perceptions on the state of the economy and society. Second, it finds that the probability of being more leftist has not significantly increased. Two theories that argue that political outcomes do not necessarily reflect the political ideology of the median voter are reviewed to explain the findings.

What About Brazil? The Rise and Fall of an emerging Global Actor
(Latin American Studies Program, University of Delaware, Newark, DE, 2016-10-31) Contipelli, Ernani
After the stabilization of the economy brought about by the Real Plan, and the hard-fought social benefits won during Lula’s government, Brazil generated great expectations as an emerging global actor that was geared up to emerge as one of the leading economies in the near future. However, this dream turned into a nightmare when Brazil encountered a serious institutional and economic crisis that unmasked the truth about the policies of short-term gains used by the government, thus damaging the image of the country and frustrating the expectations concerning its future. The present article aims to present, in its first part, the arguments exposed by The Economist, and analyze Brazil’s economic rise and fall. Thereafter, we intend to submit these arguments for a critical review, to reflect upon what has happened, is happening, and could happen to Brazil and its society, demonstrating the chronic problems that affect its production, industry and investments, and specific points that need urgent reforms to put the country back again on the track of sustainable economic growth.
