The Department of English serves the university through research and teaching focused on reading and writing, broadly conceived. The Department is vitally engaged with all literatures in English: British and American literature, certainly, but also world literature and the range of texts displayed on page and on screen, in images and in words.

The Department’s primary scholarly strength is in contextual and archival research. We focus on both literary and non-literary texts, working with both print and material culture. Our faculty explore the ways texts are constructed, read, interpreted, and used. Our work draws upon the extensive collections of the University of Delaware's libraries and museums, as well as upon the region’s rich archives and cultural resources.

A second, complementary strength is in writing: our faculty include distinguished writing specialists, journalists, and creative writers. The writing faculty enhance our department's reputation through high profile publishing, through consulting work and internship programs, and through advocacy for the arts in public schools and in the community. Visit the Department of English website for more information.
