The Art Conservation Department at the University of Delaware has an undergraduate and master’s program in art conservation, the latter in collaboration with Winterthur Museum, Library & Gardens; and a new interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Preservation Studies that received permanent standing in fall 2013. The undergraduate program at the University of Delaware is a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree designed to help prepare students for graduate work in art conservation and related fields. It has been in existence since 1971 and is presently one of six undergraduate art conservation programs in the country. The Master’s program (the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation — WUDPAC) has a three-year curriculum designed to educate and prepare graduate students to be conservators of cultural property. Our MS program has been in existence since 1974, and is one of only four graduate programs in art conservation in the United States. The Preservation Studies Program (PSP) is an interdisciplinary doctoral course of study based on the philosophies, research methodologies, and policies informing preservation efforts focused on art, architecture, landscapes, and material culture. It is distinct from other discipline-based courses of graduate study in that it provides a mechanism to combine cross-field expertise toward doctoral study in preservation. The program began in 2005.
