DescriptionThe proposed design for an area of reflection is centered around the historically African American Churches in New Castle, which includes Mt. Salem UAME and Bethany UAME churches. The buildings were centers of social and spiritual life for the African American community. They would have been one of the few places where Black citizens could have leadership positions and were free from discrimination and violence in antebellum and post-antebellum America. The design includes resetting the brick and stone walkway in front of the church as well as placing a bench in front of the church for quiet reflection. The proposed bench is a backless bench in a cast stone material.en_US
