| Abstract | The gods of the New World were representations of natural forces like the wind and rain or of activities like war and commerce. For the Franciscan friars who ventured to evangelize the lands discovered, there was no doubt that, based on their own Judeo-Christian tradition, each and every one of these gods was a demon, but only one of them was called Lucifer by the Franciscan chroniclers—the one called Tezcatlipoca who, because of his attributes, colors and attitudes, was compared with the Prince of Darkness by the friars. Los dioses del Nuevo Mundo eran representaciones de fuerzas naturales como el viento y la lluvia o de actividades tales como la guerra y el comercio, para el fraile franciscano quien se aventuró a evangelizar las tierras descubiertas no hubo ninguna duda de que todos y cada uno de ellos eran demonios, en tanto que no los comprendieron y basando su juicio en su propia tradición judeocristiana; pero solo uno de ellos fue llamado Lucifer por los cronistas franciscanos, aquel que era llamado Tezcatlipoca, por sus atributos, colores y actitudes fue comparado con el Príncipe del Infierno por los franciscanos. | en_US |
