| Abstract | This article explores the idealized and ideal aurality of a provincial Mexican city. Like any other city, Guanajuato produces a variety of everyday sounds in her different neighborhoods; however, this article casts the city not only as producer of sound, but also as listener. Shaped like an ear thanks to an unusual topography, and posited as maternal within Mexican discourse, the provincial city listens to domestic tourists’ national angst, as well as to other outsiders’ voices and desires. While some might assert that this only compounds the city’s marginal construction – as maternal, feminine, passive – the provincial city’s unique ability to listen to others and to herself may point to a stronger subjectivity than one might expect. The city’s intense aurality speaks to the power of listening in a world of noisy otherness. Resumen Este artículo explora la auralidad idealizada e ideal de una ciudad provinciana de México. Como cualquier otra ciudad, Guanajuato produce una variedad de sonidos cotidianos en sus diferentes colonias; sin embargo, el artículo considera a la ciudad no solamente como productora de sonido sino también como oyente. Gracias a una topografía única, la ciudad tiene la forma de oreja, y esta característica, junto con su construcción como materna en el discurso mexicano sobre la provincia, permite que Guanajuato escuche la ansiedad nacional de los turistas domésticos y también preste atención a los deseos de sus demás Otros. Aunque se pudiera tomar esto para volver a cimentar la construcción marginada de la ciudad como materna, femenina, y pasiva, su capacidad única de escuchar tanto a otros como a ella misma podría señalar una subjetividad más fuerte de lo esperado. La intensa auralidad de la ciudad nos habla del poder del escuchar en un mundo ruidoso lleno de otros. | en_US |
