    De ceja a ceja: Retos nacionales y espejismos sexuales en "Enamorada" de Emilio Fernández

    This article analyzes Emilio Fernández’ film Enamorada (1946) by taking into account how the sexualities of the two main characters, portrayed by Pedro Armendáriz and María Félix, come into play in the director’s construction of a national Mexican imaginary. Why do the gender representations of these two characters edge towards the androgenous? How can this ambivalence be explained in the context of Mexico’s national culture after the revolution? This paper argues that despite its rather formulaic masculinism, this film surprisingly proposes a more fluid national and sexual identity than has commonly been attributed to Emilio Fernández’s work. The sexualities of this film’s protagonists, portrayed by María Félix and Pedro Armendáriz, embody an ambiguity that reconfigures cultural archetypes and indicates an aperture towards international cultural models.

    Difficult Path to Democracy: The Political Differentiation of NGOs in Rural Mexico

    Only recently have scholars and development practitioners started to question the role of NGOs in politics. After reviewing the current state of research in this area, we use evidence from the Huasteca region of the state of San Luis Potosí, in Central Mexico, to argue that NGOs have complex ties to their local political environment, including a direct role in politics. We propose a classification of NGOs according to their involvement with the local political scene, based on their level of political ambition and their political affiliation. Using ethnographic data and interviews with NGO members, we illustrate each type by describing a Huasteca NGO that embodies it.

    La respuesta perdurable: El humor satírico en "Por mi madre, bohemios" de Carlos Monsiváis

    Este estudio se ocupa del uso del lenguaje satírico y paródico en la legendaria columna “Por mi madre, bohemios”, escrita por el crítico cultural, Carlos Monsiváis, en el diario mexicano La Jornada en los años 80 y 90. Hace resaltar las maniobras ingeniosas y sumamente originales mediante las cuales Monsiváis hace que el lenguaje del poder se “auto-desconstruya” y se “auto-desligitimice”. La columna tuvo sus orígenes en 1968 en la época de las revueltas estudiantiles, pero tomó su forma definitiva al publicarse en los años 80 en el periódico, La Jornada. En 1993 se publicó una selección condensada de los ejemplos más lacerantes de “Por mi madre, bohemios” bajo el mismo título. Una colección mucho más extensa escrita en los años 90 se encuentra ahora en el Internet.(1) La columna representa, entre otras cosas, una de las maravillosas variantes del humor del escritor mexicano, el cual se manifiesta también en sus crónicas(2) y en libros como Nuevo catecismo para indios remisos (1996 [1982]),(3) el cual es una colección de 50 fábulas que satirizan los estragos de la evangelización de los indígenas mexicanos en la época colonial.
